Details of the Longberger reroute and maintenance.

The weather was perfect for a another trail care day (May 19th, 2002) for the Longberger trail. Today marked the second time in as many months for us to visit the trail for maintenance. Repeated rain storms and poor drainage were causing rapid deterioration of the trail, especially the upper portions. Last months attempt to add various water bars were not enough to stay the persistent flow of water from the mountain side.

Today, NMBA was joined by members of NVC and the Penn State Cycling Club, as well This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , author of the popular "Mountain Biking Pennsylvania." Teams divided to tackle the day's task of installing new water bars and reworking the entrance to the trail. Eventually, the teams reunited to create a reroute along the trail, since we were unable to appropriately curtail the constant flow of water. Griz aided us with his precise chainsawing, felling trees exactly where we needed them.

Hopefully, our efforts will help maintain the heavily used trail and allow riders to continue to enjoy the Longberger trail. Riders are encouraged to make every effort to avoid the trail after heavy rains, as the combination of traffic and rain drainage may help to erode this great trail.
