kevinb First Tracks - 2010/01/02 15:23 So i spent the morning vacillating between riding, x-c skiing or hitting the trainer. it was really cold and windy, 23 degrees at the house and x-c ski conditions were definitely suspect so I was all set to resign myself to a ride to nowhere when i pick up a text from HO, damn it. There was a rumor of a ride leaving at 11:30 from tussey so HO and i decided to meet there then. I was ready to go at 11:30 but nobody else was around. HO showed up at 11:30 HOtime (aka 11:40 EST), we got ready and headed out. We decided to try n stay off the ridge since that would be the windiest place so we headed up camp rd then up the gasline and across a little bit of the ridge to the Tap. We headed down the extension and with the exception of a few deer, we had first tracks on there. As HO put it, once we didn't kill ourselves on the benchcut, it was a lot of fun. Thickhead rd had actually been plowed so getting up to the gate before John Wert was pretty easy, not even too icy. The road back to the camps was ridable but you had to stay in the tire tracks. Getting from the last camp, across the gasline, to wert was ALOT more work than normal, but HO assured me the trail would be much better. For the most part he lied. We had first tracks again. I have no idea how he rode as much as he did on the single speed, i was in little chain ring, second cog for most of the trail since there was so much snow. The rock gardens were some of the easier parts to ride since the snow filled in between them and what was exposed provided a good riding surface. We finally made it bear meadows road pretty spent. I suggested we skip upper lonberger and HO didn't fight too hard. The wind had picked up to something just short of gale force so we did cut in at lower lonberger which helped minimally. At least the wind was swirling so it was only in our face seemingly 80% of the time. Ho had stopped to wait for me at one point and when i pulled up he remarked how red my face was. I assured him his was quite red too. At the bottom we skipped heading up to 3 bridges as our fingers were quite cold. A quick trip down the shoot and down carcass finished the ride.
