kevinb new years day ride? - 2009/12/29 07:55 Ive been outta pocket for about a week so have no idea what things are like in the woods right now. It does not look like we are going to get any significant melt off or new snow so what we have now is probably about what it will be like on New Years day. Im sure the x-c skiing is crap. If anybody has been out in rothrock post up and let us know if anything is ridable and if anybody is up for trying a ride post up as well
thanks!

zero Re:new years day ride? - 2009/12/29 08:28 hey kevin
we rode yesterday (monday)from galbraith gap parking lot. laurel run road was icy....but doable if you're careful. three bridges was a bit icy but ridable. lonberger was good...upper was great. tried don's log but it was a bit too icy. tuxedo was a workout but totally ridable except right at the start. tussey ridge was nothing less than awesome although it does have a few new trees down in the burned out area as would be expected. camp trail was rockin' although camp road was pretty treacherous at times. and you had to be careful on bear meadows because of ice. oh.. and yours truly almost packed it in on the ice, after getting a bit spunky on the connector trail back in to the parking lot.

all and all it was a great day in the woods.
hope that helps.

kevinb Re:new years day ride? - 2009/12/29 09:28 thats perfect, thanks. sounds like studs might make the road sections a little safer although the extra weight wont be much fun on the trail

zero Re:new years day ride? - 2009/12/29 13:17 yeah, the road's really the only place you need studs and they actually may be a hindrance on tussey.

what time are you thinking on friday? can we do ross if i come up?

kevinb Re:new years day ride? - 2009/12/29 13:33 i think ross might be a stretch. Im open to time, since you(s) would be the one(s) traveling, what time would be good for you(s)?
Any idea of coopers is ridable at all?

zero Re:new years day ride? - 2009/12/29 14:20 no clue on cooper's. but i would bet the road in from the lower end might be pretty treacherous as it runs through that narrow ravine/hollow. not sure how it would be getting to the shale pit.

seriously, if you're putting a ride together, go ahead and set it and if we/i can make it we will. weather looks iffy and i'd have to run it by my "event coordinator" to make sure i don't have any other obligations before i could commit.

plus... if you're not gonna do ross........

oh...one other thing... looks like someone ran a pugsly out tussey ridge. any clue who that might be?

Jim G Re:new years day ride? - 2009/12/29 16:24 We're starting to think about what to do for a new year's day ride. Gotta keep the tradition going.

hodog Re:new years day ride? - 2009/12/30 19:14 Rode camp, tap, ridge, tux, upper and lower lonberger, 3 bridges, ?camp? trail, carcass, tech x. Fireroads suck - gd till camp. Wiped out trying to cross laurel run rd to get to carcass! Everything good. Top of camp rd had to walk and steep up on tap but prob can be done.

Ray and co. got lucky. The windstorm has the trails f'ed up again. Did a bunch of clearing but lots of new falls. I imagine other trails are the same. I would avoid fireroads from what I've seen today.

Jim G Re:new years day ride? - 2009/12/31 12:43 Looks like it'll be a 9am start at the Rothrock parking lot. Route tbd, based on the collective wisdom of the group.

hodog Re:new years day ride? - 2010/01/01 20:44 Laurel Run Rd was incredibly slippery. We had to ride 'in the leaves' on the far side of the road. Couldn't stand in some places. May have to sled ride it!!!
