DonnaM Poacher Alert!! - 2009/11/23 11:32 I know it's always evident that there are poachers in the forests... but this was a first for me. As Mary Jo and I were finishing a ride Saturday (5PM), there was a mini-van that pulled into the Galbraith Lot. There were 3 men that got out and proceeded to pull out their provisions and GUNS!! I still can't wrap my head around whether they thought anyone who saw them was oblivious... Idiots! I overheard them say, and I quote: If you shoot it, skin it and leave it on the trail". I kid you not. I reported what I heard and saw to the police. I'm really hoping they went to investigate; however, I couldn't stick around to find out, nor did I want to. It was a bit freaky. Well... I guess, along with sharing this with you, PLEASE... PLEASE, be aware of these inconsiderate, self-absored loosers. They are out there at dusk and beyond, and I know there are quite a few night-riders on the trails. Be Safe and Be AWARE!! Donna

zero Re:Poacher Alert!! - 2009/11/24 09:00 they actually could have been legally hunting coyotes, however i don't advocate leaving the carcass on the trail.

zero Re:Poacher Alert!! - 2009/11/24 09:37 no worries here and no offense taken. and i'm not saying they weren't poachers... just unlikely that if they were they would park in the parking lot to do it....although, on the other hand, i have seen some really stupid hunters.

most coyote hunting is done at night as most coyotes are "sly like a fox" and not at all like the roadrunner's arch nemesis.

just don't howl at the moon while nightriding, like HO, and you should be fine. cheers.

jmblg Re:Poacher Alert!! - 2009/11/24 14:13 the language in *note: coyotes can be interpreted that during deer season, archery / rifle, coyotes to be hunted ONLY during deer hours. see attached hours file from PGC

* Note: Coyotes may be taken with a hunting or furtakers license, and without wearing orange, outside of any deer or bear season. During any
archery deer season, coyotes may be taken while lawfully hunting deer or with
a furtakers license. During the regular firearms deer season and any bear season,
coyotes may be taken while lawfully hunting deer or bear or with a furtakers
license, while wearing 250 square inches of fluorescent orange material in a

persons who have a valid tag and follow shot size requirements.

with respect to coyotes, why would they skin them and leave that in the woods?

my surmise is that they would only want the pelt.

that statement by the hunters was also what made me think maybe they were hunting coyotes or raccoons, but most guys hunt 'coons with dogs, so i went with coyotes. i guess they could have been after fox. i don't know anyone who actively hunts skunks or 'possums but i guess it's possible.

if they were deer poachers and wanted the meat, they wouldn't skin it in the woods as that would be pretty hard plus it would get the meat all dirty getting it out. if they were just after antlers, they wouldn't skin at all...just cut the horns off.

anyway..that's my 2 cents. maybe pontzer has some thoughts if he survived his silent planet opening.

or just maybe they were hunting snipes.

DonnaM Re:Poacher Alert!! - 2009/11/25 15:16 Whatever it be... just be careful at night. Safety is the primary concern.

gregh Re:Poacher Alert!! - 2009/11/25 18:23 I know this sounds childish or corny or whatever you want to call it..I use those led valve stem lights around here..because I hear shots at all hours of the night.in 2004 or 05 A bunch of kids shot over 100 deer with a spotlight throughout the area. and left them lay dead. one dropped a prescrition bottle and they were caught.
