Freeride park - 2006/11/20 14:17I'm thinking about building a freeride park in Snow Shoe. I've been doing alot of "all mountain" type of riding and the trails in Sproul and Rock Run are incredible but you need a little technical foundation to really enjoy what they have to offer. If you've ridden with me this year, you know that I just started riding and I've been pulling some friends into the sport also. I quickly realized that there is a major gap(hurdle) between beginner(trying to find the endurance) and intermediate riding(clearing obstacles... and lovin' it!). This part is where I believe we lose most riders in this sport.
I've been checking out different types of construction for skinnies, jumps, etc. and think that it would be a blast to build it. Why Snow Shoe? Well, I'm here ... and it offers alot a resources. Land, materials, and potential. I almost started to build some things in my backyard but started thinking how cool it would be to have a MTB hangout. A place to just meet up with other riders on occasion and practice and take your skills to the next level. I've learned more from other riders this year than I ever could have on my own.
I think that I can find a free piece of property to build this on but before I do, I wondered if anyone would ride it. So my question to the forum is would you come to Snow Shoe to ride and is this something interesting to others of just me?
Let me know what you think?

Re:Freeride park - 2006/11/20 15:11I'd ride at something like that. I'm pretty new to the MTB sport too and what you are planning sounds like fun. I'm a runner and use biking as a cross training sport. I lack the technical skills to do a lot of the trails that are out there. Something like what you are planning would be good. Just too bad it's in SNow Shoe

Re:Freeride park - 2006/11/20 16:25Very cool idea, and yes, build it and they will come. Make sure though before you get started that you know what you are getting your self in for. Make sure its designed right, built to last and that there is nothing stupid to get sued over. Free land in Snow Shoe? Almost makes me want to move there. Well that and the IGA.
Check out the IMBA Site for some technical trail building techniques.

problem is that there are two guys doing all the building and one of them owes me money, so most of the people around here that would be into it are boycotting till i get paid. after that mess is cleared up, there will be plenty of people riding and working there regularly.
also, we've begun incorporating more and more technical features in our trail system right around here in rothrock. if you'd like to know more about either project, ask for me next time you stop by the shop.

Seriously Don? That's a lot of pull. You got half the $, right?

but thus far, i've been told by half a dozen people (outside of the shop) that they won't go up to check it out until i've been paid. now whether or not that holds once people i don't personally know start heading up there, i don't know.
i'm hoping that since i've been able to talk with at least one of them, that i'll be paid before spring comes and we can put it all behind us and enjoy the trails. i'm not a man to hold a grudge, nor cry over spilled milk. now mt dew, that's another story.

Re:Freeride park - 2006/11/21 20:00all good stuff... I didn't know about that project in Lock Haven but still think that it would be cool for an area of obstacles not just ones found on a trail. I'd like to practice some techniques before "hucking" myself off of anything out on a trail where it may take an ambulance longer to find my carcass .
From some research I've done on the web, most of these things fail due to not enough volunteers. we're pretty spread out around central PA so that was my fear about starting something too large to maintain myself. Frank made a great point about liability. From what I'm reading on IMBA's site, even a waiver isn't keeping people out of lawsuits.
I'm going to throw together some plans for a condensed FR park(more of a training grounds). Sort of what a BMX or pump track represents as far as how much can fit within a small area. I'm going to have to research the liability more since I don't intend on "owning" the track or making it any kind of business.
If the snow holds off after hunting season, we'll have to give that trail in LH a whirl. I'll start practicing in my backyard on my oh wait... I don't have anywhere to practice yet.

Re:Freeride park - 2006/11/21 21:32Maintenance on a site like that might also be an issue. You might want to check with your local County Parks & Rec commission or something and see if they might consider a long term O&M agreement if you build the thing. Probably not, but it might be worth a shot.

What ever happened here? Did you end up building a FR park up there in no-man's land?Chuck Norris once broke the land speed record on a bicycle that was missing its chain and the back tire.

Re:Freeride park - 2009/12/06 01:43I would also like to now more about the Black Mo and Lock Haven Free Ride sections. I have notice a section of the Golden Rod Trail that been worked on near Lock Haven. Banks, jumps and a gap jump, I tend to pass it up for more single track on the DHT.
