kevinb ross trail - 2009/05/02 21:00 did ross today, its pretty clear, only had to stop once to get under a small deadfall. it could definitely use some brushing back and small stick clean up, but worth the ride. the deer fence is gone, not sure when that happened. we followed the old fence line around to the trail down to the creek, not sure what happens if you follow the trail across the old fence line, I did not see anything coming down from that direction to the trail that continues down from the fence line. Ill need to do a bit more splorin one of these days.

frank Re:ross trail - 2009/05/03 17:30 wow! It will be worth looking into that! I may try to do some exploring over that way next week. Old maps have a connector from the bottom of ross over to cooper's gap, but I have never looked because of the fence.

Jeff Re:ross trail - 2009/07/19 19:00 Eric Durante and I hiked Ross today and trimmed back a lot of the trail. Should be good riding if you're into that sorta thing. There were 2 falls of note. One at about 2000 ft-msl that you probably want a chainsaw for and another below the steep part that you absolutely need a chainsaw.

We got a little confused at the part where I think the old deer fence used to be. We went left along the double track to Seeger Road, but it also looks like you can go right and I'm assuming this is where the trail actually goes?

kevinb Re:ross trail - 2009/07/20 12:15 I believe you used to go straight along that double track for a bit then the trail originally went down to the right and continued down after intersecting the deer fence again, but that piece seems to have gone away while the deer fence was there. Currently the only way i know to find the continuation of the trail is to follow the old deer fence line down, then across, then up through a bit of a mucky section. Just after it crests, the trail heads down to your right through a bunch of ferns to a bridge over stone creek and runs you into the back of a camp on stone creek road. i would really like to figure out the old trail and reestablish it since that deer fence thing aint much fun

Jeff Re:ross trail - 2009/07/20 13:26 We hiked down that mucky section and saw bike tracks. I may have found that other section you're describing that heads back up to the muck, but I turned around when it started heading back uphill, maybe I can email you my GPS tracks.

Allen Re:ross trail - 2009/07/20 16:37 Ride the mucky section then hit a clearing.
Take a right when you get back to the fence line.
You will then climb the old fence row for awhile.
Than left on the trail.
Will have to find the missing piece thier is a missing connecter. On the GPS map we were about 1000 feet away from the trail at one point. But went left when we should have gone straight.

zero Re:ross trail - 2009/07/21 08:30 since the first time frank drug my sorry butt down ross, around cooper's and up sassafras THE STOOPID WAY, i've heard rumors of the ross "missing link."
i'm starting to think it's a myth.... a legend....a fable. in the same realm as the PA mountain lion, david lewis's hidden treasure and the white woman of pond bank road.

frank Re:ross trail - 2009/07/22 00:48 God, I forgot I had subjected you to that. And you still keep coming back!
For added bonus, since we are looking for missing links, really old maps (like from the 30s) have a connection coming off Coopers Gap rd where it intersects the gasline above Penneypacker Camp and heading across the bottom of Ross and meeting Seegar Rd. I have looked for this several times, even found a blazed trail that died out at one point. IF you could find that, it would be a sweet connection, feeding Ross right into the Cooper's Gap network pretty easily.

zero Re:ross trail - 2009/07/22 08:49 looking at the 1924 map on maptech, am i correct that cooper's gap road, as it is today, does not connect to stone creek road and that chestnut springs was the usable road?

what's the other trail from the tower...big kettle? is it open/usable?

Jim G Re:ross trail - 2009/07/22 20:09 From the Greenwood/Seeger tower? Wouldn't that be Johnson trail? I suppose it's usable by some...

kevinb Re:ross trail - 2009/07/22 21:44 i think that trail he speaks of goes down the other side of the mountain from johnson

frank Re:ross trail - 2009/07/23 00:26 Yep other side of the mountain from Johnson.
I had lunch with Herm today and we were talking about this discussion. He said the year they opened Ross, Big Kettle was pretty obvious at the top. it wasn't a priority to them because they had Ross open. About 5 years after that, when he went back, he couldn't find it.
As for the bottom trail, he has the same recollection that I do, that there used to be a blazed trail off the gasline, but that it died out. I just think we were looking in the wrong direction.

yeah..the trail to the east...towards cooper's. not johnson.

so anyway... can ross be followed the whole way to stone creek road or do you still need to go out to seeger? it's my mission to get back up to ride ross this year.
