I am under the impression that "good downhill" West of Maquire is not open to bikes. Well or at least was according to Brian F when he was there like 5 years ago.

What trail is grass trail, what is deer carcass and what is technical ecstacy?

-grass trail is the trail after 3B?
-deer carcass - the small trail between the roads?
-Tech Ecstasy = the little trail across the road from the parking lot?

kevinb Re:Long, Detweiler, The Extension, John Wert, Shit - 2009/05/21 08:47 you got it on those trails. Its really not possible to use the grassy trail as it cuts right through a camp. also I believe but not certain that carcass is actually on private ground but has been left open for public use, probably not a good option there either. and tech ex would not be a good choice as well imo.

hodog Re:Long, Detweiler, The Extension, John Wert, Shit - 2009/05/21 09:31 Just throwing this out as an idea - do Croyle up. It is rideable but horrible. It is STOOPID. There's your hike-a-bike. I'm partial to the idea of doing 101 trails the opposite direction.

Also remember the route has to have 2 spots for aid stations.

I like the Maguire idea, but it will injure someone, so we'll need spotters.

Raymo853 Re:Long, Detweiler, The Extension, John Wert, Shit - 2009/05/21 09:35 OK here is the proposed course I came up with. Feedback and abused welcomed. 57 Miles. Lots more road than last year

-Start at Tussey go up Laurel Run Road to the new Bald Knob trail route
-along Bald Knob, down Maquire, up little Shingletown and out of the Gap
-Up Laurel Run to Shingletown then down Sand Spring
-Up Bear Gap, down N Bear Meadows
-Tux, Ridge, Extension with the new ending
-Thickhead up and down to Penn Roo, out to Stone Creek
-to Brush Ridge, up to Chestnut, Lingle Valley and up Bear Gap
-Chicken Head to Conklin Rd, then Coopers to Skittaka
-UP all of Skittaka, Coopers Gap to Brush Ridge Ext, then Stone Creek to Bear Meadows
-Bear MEadows to Beidleheimer, up all of Gettis, down Bear Gap, up to Old Laurel and down old Laurel and END at the end of Old Laurel.

jmblg Re:Long, Detweiler, The Extension, John Wert, Shit - 2009/05/21 10:29 ray, consider cutting out sandspring, bear gap, after shingletown go back down Laurel, then 3b, longberger (opposite 101) to Tuxedo. cuts out some miles of fire road and probably a few miles overall.

EDITED, and / or used the stoopid to clear the trail from shingletown to bald knob trail (the one that come off of laurel road), out to laurel, then 3b, longbrgr, tux

I like this but maybe after Shingletown climb up to Old Laurel and go down that and then 3B and Long. That way there will not be people going both directions on Laurel Run. I am also thinking to just cut out all of the going into Shigletown Gap and just having the start be climb up to and down Old Laurel.

Oh crap! I had assumed this was clear and was the new path to Bald Knob. Am I all wrong on that? Where is the new path to Bald? I really do not want people goign in and out of Shingletown Gap on the same trail.

kevinb Re:Long, Detweiler, The Extension, John Wert, Shit - 2009/05/21 11:09 personally i would skip the shingletown stuff and do a bigger loop in coopers, at the end of chicken peter head across beautiful and down deer tick and long cut then up all of shitakka. i agree with ho that maguire would not be good, although i know the psu folk had it in their race a couple years ago. i also like ho's idea of going up croyle, did it once last year, and its a grind for sure

kevinb Re:Long, Detweiler, The Extension, John Wert, Shit - 2009/05/21 11:12 right now the trail is only half way finished from clemons over to sand spring. it wont be finished from bald knob for a while

jmblg Re:Long, Detweiler, The Extension, John Wert, Shit - 2009/05/21 11:21 i like Kevin's suggestions AND it's better to hit Old Laurel early, then with 50+ miles in as could be some bad falls...
would need to have spotters at the top of croyle to ensure no dh'ers are hitting it

Raymo853 Re:Long, Detweiler, The Extension, John Wert, Shit - 2009/05/21 11:40 Just email me if you want a copy of the proposed map. Shown with two things that may change. 52 miles total.

1. Not climbing the whole way up to Old Laurel in the beginning, but just to # Bridges (reduced course by 3 miles)
2. Climbing up Croyle instead of Gettis Ridge. Not sure but I bet it is a wash in distance.

I tried to attach by Rodney has the size of files set too low.

hodog Re:Long, Detweiler, The Extension, John Wert, Shit - 2009/05/21 15:25 Here's my suggestion:

Bear Gap then onto road, shitaka the 'fun' way. Then sand hole X to sand hole hill climb. Back on Top, chickenpeter to complete loop.

Why? We'll need a water station or aid station there (top of bear gap).

Why not do chesnut springs instead of coopers road?

Also for the end I'd rather ride down North Bear Meadows Rd and hit upper lonberger to finish. It will break up the fireroad plus go by the Bear Meadows overlook which is cool. It might be shorter too.

HO
