hodog Greenwood Furnace Park Trails - 2009/04/30 14:59 Are the 'ski' trails at Greenwood Furnace State Park open to biking? Are they beginner friendly? Just thinking about the May group ride.

kevinb Re:Greenwood Furnace Park Trails - 2009/04/30 16:30 im 99% sure that for the most part they are in the state forest, not the park, although if you follow that jeep trail sort of at the end it will end in the park. to that end, the trails are not marked no bikes so they are legal to ride. I have not been back on them in a few years so I have no idea what shape they are in, i do remember they tended to be quite muddy in sections but things have been dry.
My thoughts for the "beginner ride" would be to shuttle into coopers and start from the Shittaka parking area. it would need to include deer tick which I would not necessarily call a beginner climb, but walking isnt the worst thing that can happen to somebody. It really depends on the level of beginner, I think all the "beginners" that were at Circleville and certainly tussey could handle a loop from there. but if we get any true beginners then we could have issues.

Jim G Re:Greenwood Furnace Park Trails - 2009/05/01 08:08 I've been curious about these trails for my in-house beginners. Probably the worst issue is that historically there's been a lot of horse traffic in there and the trails at the bottom of the bowl were in pretty bad shape due to all the "post-holing."

The nice thing is that you can ride from the park and get on the jeep trail that Kevin mentions (Tram trail?), and stay above the bowl for a while. I think Tram parallels 305 for quite a ways but I don't know the condition of the trail. There's also a cut off that crosses 305 and comes back into the park through the campground.

When is the Greenwood group ride?

Allen Re:Greenwood Furnace Park Trails - 2009/05/01 19:44 The ones outside the park need a lot of work. We haven’t cut any of the dead falls out for two years now. We never did get them trimmed back. As for beginners the double track old road would probable be O.K. But I only know about the couple of trails I was on. The trail gnomes use to ride them before the entire Cooper’s gap stuff was built. If you can bribe them with some High Life they might talk.
