1) Currently the extension exit onto the gasline is on Forestry property. So we don't have to move the existing trail.
2) Deer fence on opposite side of gasline is on Forestry property. So we can use the deer fence as an exit instead of the gasline.
Can we just cross the gasline and figure a way to the deer fence for an interim solution? I scouted this before I put in the gasline alternative (that no one uses!) and I remember it being a huge rock field. My problem is I don't have a detailed map enough to know *exactly* where the private property is. It would be helpful to us to us if the boundaries were marked.

Re:Extension interim proposal - 2008/10/29 17:59For once your assumptions are correct. The fence line basically follows the boundary. The trail we constructed is all on Rothrock.
Please lets keep this discussion focused on what can be done, not personal attacks. If that starts the thread will have to be moved. If you want to register a complaint, come to the meeting on Monday where we'll have a feats of strength, an aluminum pole and an airing of the grievances.

Re:Extension interim proposal - 2008/10/30 09:35Great humor Frank, nice to have this, though... Festivus is Dec 23rd. Those that have a problem with Christmas decorations before Thanksgiving, may have issues recognizing this before Thanksgiving.

Re:Extension interim proposal - 2008/10/30 12:29Does anyone know why this woman suddenly has a problem with this? I'm guessing that it may have something to do with the gas line work and its impact on their property. I've run into her several time and its always been friendly, not to mention she is a cyclist herself.
I didn't even know that was private property there, just figured it was a camp on state land like all the others.

Re:Extension interim proposal - 2008/10/30 13:00from what i understand its a liability issue but have no idea what precipitated it at this point. Her property sort of triangles across the gas line, a bit down from where the extention hits the gas line to a good piece down, ending at a point on the other side of the gasline, can't remember exactly how far into the woods, but not very. Personally I think we should look at this as a great opportunity like Frank posted to get some more trail approved and built. Theres always been a bit of a legal issue over using the gas line as a downhill anyways.

Re:Extension interim proposal - 2008/10/30 13:34if this is the woman that hikes the trail on occasion, a year ago or more we ran into her and 2 other women b#$%^ing about the fire ring at the top of the gas line (where tussey crosses) and were physically removing it.

i hiked this section years ago when we were doing the beginnings of the work on the extension, and i've always felt that there should be a trail from the exit of the extension back up to the top of tuxedo. a lot of work to be sure, but where else would you find that kind of loop in rothrock? not many exists where you can start and end at the same point without using connections.
anyway, long story short, there is a TON of rock. one of the selling points to me. but yes, i would think that it is a good opportunity to resolve an issue correctly by respecting private property and getting the go ahead for a new section of trail. every body's happy and we can show the new forestry guy what we can do from ground zero on some trail. i've always been proud of how far we've come whenever i ride the benched section of tuxedo. i remember when no one knew what a bench cut was around here.
and you guys thought you were done with my opinion.

Re:Extension interim proposal - 2008/10/30 14:35Buy a lottery ticket everyone. It was scary enough last year when Frank and I realized we had the same idea of extending the extension back up to tusexdos. But now Don has the same idea! Snakes alive, I've got goosebumps! Is this a Halloween prank?
Forestry has put deer fence up (or the remnants of) up most of that side of the ridge. I tried connecting these at one point but never finished. Truthfully they aren't fun to ride. But since most of the area is recently logged, it is open to many possibilities. A ton of work for sure.

Re:Extension interim proposal - 2008/10/31 10:29Scouted a few lines yesterday. Just to get to the deer fence you have to go through a huge patch of big rocks. Really no way around it. More info at Monday meeting.

Re:Extension interim proposal - 2008/10/31 18:23Dang Myers, I was going to propose "Lightsaber" but since you already said "The Connection" I guess we'll have to go with that.

Re:Extension interim proposal - 2008/10/31 21:14Don, there must be less oxygen in LI, the first bench cut trail we built here was the original extension in 2002, Tuxedo was 3 years later. I think there is still a sweet photo of Harry, Steve Cain and Brain Fultz marveling at their tread work on this site from that day!

as for the bench yes, the extension was prior to tuxedo. but when you look at the bench on the extension, your first exposure to it, is in a section where the bench simply put isn't the greatest. it rides fine, despite having crept a foot or more downslope. but honestly, it wasn't the highest quality bench cut we've ever seen. whereas when you look at the section of bench at the bottom of tuxedo, it screams "hey we know what we're doing, and this is how it's done!" i really just see a lot of improvement in the quality of work that we've managed to accomplish as we've gotten more experience with it. that was the compliment i was after. i'm looking forward to the same level of quality on future benchcut endeavors. it makes me smile.
and i've had this connection idea since we routed the original extension, only then it was just to the bottom of kettle. admittedly though it was with the intent of dropping kettle, reichly and or shingle and climbing back up the extension. that isn't anyone's favorite climb and when tuxedo went in, then i thought, why not take it a bit further? and do it the other direction. but just like long mountain, it is an a$$load of work. hard work.
