nabilkamal Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/24 22:22 I think the Bald Knob Ridge downhill is one of the most underrated downhills in Rothrock. Of course it's no Wildcat, Spruce Gap, or Ross but I dig it despite having to climb Sand Spring to get there.

Now its totally clear and rideable from the top of Bald Knob Ridge to Laurel Run Road. There were two logs down toward the end of the steep section. I took one out and cut off half the other so you can ride over it. Below that a big deadfall crossed the trail so I built a rock bridge over it. I also built a clean route around the big tree that was down in the middle of the trail at the end close to Laurel Run Rd.

frank Re:Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/24 23:36 Sounds good, and if Ho and I can ever finish flagging our grand plans between the final decent on the other end of the ridge and the bridge, you won't have to climb sand spring to get there. Plus, you could ride the full ridge before the decent!

hodog Re:Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/25 10:03 Good job, Nabil! You're my HERO! Can you find me a woman, too! Thanks for the efforts. You're really picking up the slack for the rest of us slackers!
I'm dreaming, but I'd like to link the end to parallel Laurel Run to Three Bridges. I've hiked it and it looks good and swoopy. Plus it would be quite long. It's on the 5 yr plan.
Of course some idiot like Bergman will start climbing it then it will become a traffic hassle like lonberger

nabilkamal Re:Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/25 10:38 I'm slightly bored of riding thus the massive trail work this week.

Anyway, explain to me in further detail your plans for the trail? I understand connecting it to 3 bridges (which would be awesome) but not the other way? Do you mean from the Shingletown parking lot or something?

kevinb Re:Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/25 11:33 the plan as i understand it would have a trail working from where Bald knob trail more or less bottoms out before the little climb back up to laurel run road going around and up towards shingletown gap. It would start climbing and possibly do some switchback on some of the "charcoal flats" that are in that area where clemons trail goes up to bald knob. I think the master plan would be to take it around into the gap and hook up with the "trail" running between Maguire and where Bald knob trail comes down into shingletown gap, but thats speculation. Basically the idea is to not have to climb all the way up laurel run road and also not have to climb up the eroded sand spring trail to get to the ridge.

Hey, that's my dream! You're talking on the south side of the road, right?

nabilkamal Re:Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/25 22:08 I'm like a proud papa. I rode it today and it was nice. I took a pic of the rock bridge I built at the bottom of the downhill.

I am really into linking that trail to 3 bridges. That would be really sweet and a great place to start.

kevinb Re:Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/26 08:59 that is one nice solid looking ramp, nice job!

kevinb Re:Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/26 10:30 to respond to Death, I think it would have to be on the south side since the north side is all private ground. a quick look at the map makes it look like we could hook up with the bottom, flatter section of old laurel run rd trail pretty easily. obviously this would all depend on forestry's consent

hodog Re:Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/26 10:51 Forestry owns a good bit below Laurel Run road. That is where I have hiked/scouted. It is dying for a trail. The private land only becomes an issue when you get close to the road at the 3 bridges intersection.

kevinb Re:Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/26 11:32 I would certainly defer to your first hand knowledge, im assuming the trees are marked at the boarder, but raymo's map shows the boarder really close to the road below bald knob.

nabilkamal Re:Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/26 14:22 Forgive my ignorance but how hard is it to get permission to build a new trail in Rothrock?

kevinb Re:Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/26 15:33 depends on who you are to some degree. but there is an approval process and there is a new guy within forestry in charge of recreation that trails seem to fall under. The best bet at this point is to go through Frank as he has the closest relationship.

frank Re:Go ride the Bald Knob Ridge Downhill... - 2008/09/26 17:24 It depends. Reroutes are easier than "new" trails. The big thing is to think about it in terms of resource management. Just because it seems like a good idea to go from point a to point b is not really enough to justify approval. Trails that will mitigate issues (trail erosion, user conflict) score better.
For an example, it will probably be easier to get a trail on the south side of the road considered than the north side. The forestry boundaries are notoriously ill defined and likely to be moved. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to show horn a trail in between the road and private property. proposing it as an replacement for the part of laurel run that drops straight to the road after the rock garden to make a nice loop.
