Allen Shitalka - 2008/03/23 08:32 State has upper shittalka ruined, they're putting in a a deer fence and turned it into a road...A MUDDY ROAD. no fun, stay off for your own good.

I got this in an email today. Haven't had a chance to check it out.

frank Re:Shitalka - 2008/03/23 16:44 Did they say whether it was just the entrance (what had been double track) or the whole upper section? Either way it sucks, but if its just the entrance, that can be fixed.
I'll see what I can find out this week.

Allen Re:Shitalka - 2008/03/24 18:38 It is probable ¾ of a mile long and some areas are big mud holes.
They put all the fence post up today. It will be able to be ridden when the water dries up.

mattd Re:Shitalka - 2008/03/25 11:46 I haven't been out there this year, but I'm confused. Did they log that area? Why the fence and why did they bulldoze part of the trail??

kevinb Re:Shitalka - 2008/03/25 14:13 just my guess as to why along the trail, the top part of the trail follows and old road of some sort, they are probably just following that and the machine they use to dig the post holes has a pretty big messy footprint. as to why, that is still a mystery. there has not been any logging up there lately that I know of

Allen Re:Shitalka - 2008/03/25 15:36 I asked a coworker about the forestry building all the fences.
He said that the last reason he heard was that they were doing undergrowth studies.

frank Re:Shitalka - 2008/03/25 21:17 Allen, have you seen it yet? I would suggest that we all wait to get up in arms about this until someone with a sense of what it used to be and now is gets out there.
As for the why of the fences, oak regeneration is really inviting for deer. it typically takes 3-5 years for the main shoot of an oak to get established enough for it survive grazing.
Even with the fences, I am betting we can figure out some option. Maybe we will dedicate some time to this on Sunday's trail work.

Allen Re:Shitalka - 2008/03/26 15:47 Yes I was up their and it’s not that bad. My bad, I assumed when I said the post were up and it would be ride able when dry that you would know I was their. Not up in arms at all just trying to keep riders out of he mud. The builders made a nice road. Hopefully we can ride around the top half. Just waiting for them to finish the fence, it was almost done yesterday.

DarthMyers Re:Shitalka - 2008/04/07 00:16 Shenanigans !! saw it. not impressed. why they would do this to one of the best trails in that area is mind boggling. At least put up a latch gate, so the first part could still be accessible. We won't be able to get access to the 15 to 20 perfectly places rocks that formed the line. Now what happens to the 50 course? (the Double D IPA added to this post)

allen and i had a bit of a friendly discussion about this yesterday afternoon after he asked " well didn't ya read the forums?" i guess i failed to see the little "laughing face" after the statement or his "not that bad" and my "not that bad" are at opposite ends of the spectrum. LOL!

ok..in all fairness...he said it was actually better than it had been, however i was having flashbacks of my first 24 hours of canaan race out of davis. thick gooey mud almost up to the hubs. shoe sucking mud. stinky quagmire. on and on and on. not pretty at all.

good news is that rich also stopped by the van as we were packing up and mentioned working on a solution. rich to the rescue.

RothRocks Re:Shitalka - 2008/04/07 12:00 I was out there yesterday with one of the guys from the Dirt Rag forum. We had the misfortune of trying to ride that section of Shitalka. I have to say it was pretty depressing to see one of my favorite trials in that state. We had mud up to our hubs for about 3/4 of a mile.

We did run into Rich several times throughout the day. He did say that they were working on a reroute that would come out just across the road from Chicken Peter and connect with the tail where the deer fence turns the corner. That section of trial that was destroyed might be fixable but it looks like they hit some springs. If those dry out it might be ok.

mattd Re:Shitalka - 2008/04/07 13:28 I still do not understand why they had to ruin this trail just to put in a fence. Isn't DCNR supposed to at least consider recreation uses of land before making changes?

kevinb Re:Shitalka - 2008/04/07 13:44 The trail basically hijacked an old logging road of some sort at that point, so while not trying to say what they did was right, they basically took the road back. I believe this has come up when concerns around logging taking out trails have come up as well and the state doesn't seem to see it our way.

Never said it was dry. The not bad was the overall view of the damage.
