Raystown Trailwork - 2007/10/19 12:35As we had discussed at the club meeting last week, there is a trailwork day scheduled for Sunday Nov 18th at Raystown. Clark is looking for some idea on how many people will be there as there will be food and some REI swag sorta stuff from the sounds of it. We'll have a better idea of exactly the work to be done closer to the time but it most likely will be mostly trial finish work, using hand tools after the machines have gone through to create the trail bed.

Re:Raystown Trailwork - 2007/10/22 11:26also keep in mind there is work going on constantly during the week down there so if anybody has a day off or time during the week to head down to help, just get a hold of Frank, the would love the help

Re:Raystown Trailwork - 2007/10/23 21:59i'll try and keep the date clear. is there going to be mechanized activity at that time, or is it strictly manpower labor again?

Re:Raystown Trailwork - 2007/10/24 08:39Plan on good 'ole manpower, mostly finish work. But there could be other opportunities like chainsaw work. It will take a few weeks for the trail cutters to figure out just where they need the help. So we will know more closer to the date. Volunteer labor is a huge part of this project! That can't be stressed enough.

Re:Raystown Trailwork - 2007/10/25 22:21So we are one week in and things are looking good. The rain yesterday put a little bit of a damper on progress, but by the beginning of next week, the first trail should be done. The next one to be built will include several cool views of the lake and at least one section of rocks! I have never seen so much dirt since I left DC. If people did have time to come out during the week, Dan Hudson and either Jim or I are there from 8am until about 6pm Monday through Thursday. Fridays we cut out early as Dan drives home for the weekend. There is plenty of finish work that can be done at anytime. There is a good chance that we should have about 5 miles of trails (including the sections we have built previously) done when the volunteer day rolls around. So if you want to come down to help, Let me know through Wheelworks. We can certainly plan on a beer at Boxers post work!

Don't worry Don, I'm sure you'll get to "labor" handing out donuts again this year.
I should be able to make it.

Re:Raystown Trailwork - 2007/11/01 23:23well, yeah. the donut dash, as i like to call it, was good fun. the reason for asking though, was more that if there's mechanized stuff, i'll not bring the dog around.

Re:Raystown Trailwork - 2007/11/02 09:16i doubt if there will be any mechinized work going on but I cant necessarily promise that, but its certainly not the focus. The main idea is to "clean up" behind what the machines have cut, clip laurel etc down close to the ground, probably some raking etc. Even if there was some work at the far end with the machines, you could make sure and be a few miles from where that was happening if you want.

Re:Raystown Trailwork - 2007/11/02 10:45We won't be running the machines on the 18th. Its not such a hot idea to have people too close when you're moving them around. A hippo on roller skates might be an apt description to describe the precision turns of the Sweco, and it has no backing siren. There is absolutely no laurel to be trimmed at Raystown. Nor Blueberry. What there is to do is plenty of raking and grooming, removing berberry bushes at the roots, and clearing brush ahead of where we have worked. Oh, and cleaning up the trails that were built on the TCC visits. I talked to Jim last night and it sounds like they have gotten pretty far on the second trail, so there is a good chance it will be a loop when we are down there on the 18th.

Re:Raystown Trailwork - 2007/11/06 11:37Start time for the work day is 9:30 Meet at the intersection of Baker Hollow Road and Susquehannock Road. Take PA Route 26 a few miles south of Huntingdon and turn onto Seven Points Road toward the Seven Points area of Raystown Lake. Take Seven Points Road to left turn onto Baker Hollow Road. Take Baker Hollow Road and turn right onto Susquehannock Camp Road (just past Old Loggers Trailhead on Baker Hollow Road). We will meet there and get organized, then proceed to where we will be working (close by). Please bring tools and gloves if you can (loppers, hand sheers, pulaski, fire rake, etc). Please let Kevin or Clark know if you are attending so we know how much food to get and can effectively plan the activity.

Re:Raystown Trailwork - 2007/11/13 08:07We need a headcount for lunch on Sunday, so far we have:
Pontzer, Scott, Kevin, HO, and maybe Don. If you are at all thinking about going please post. It would suck to show up and have 1/2 slice of pizza because they did not order enough.
Also we are riding afterwards. There is a cool shale pit to play in. Big Dawg and I will lead a group of renegades down to the cliffs. Not sure what the water temp is but it might be warm enough to swim.

Re:Raystown Trailwork - 2007/11/13 09:14I'll be there. Rumor of abundant dirt has me salivating. Although the mention of a 1/2 slice of pizza may also be the cause of the dripping drool. Any car pool options?
