Wilderness 101 scouting reports - 2007/07/08 00:10Can folks post here trail conditions for the 101 trails? Of most importance would be accurate description of any logs down, such as how many and where it might be easiest to access the trail. I would hate to lug a saw all the way up croyle if I could get at it from the top. Thanks.

Sassafras: Lower has one fall, at the mid point. Small but compound and off the ground. Be careful ducking under, a hidden stump caught us all in the back
Lewistown: A OK. I like the new bridger
No Name: Fine
Stillhouse: Dry, nice. Bridge is maybe not all that bad. Is the upper gate new? It is so annoying to get around.

Re:Wilderness 101 scouting reports - 2007/07/08 23:40a week ago there was a tree down over the railroad bed about 1/2 mile before you get to the tunnel @ coburn. It's the top bit of the tree with about 10 or so smallish branches. I'll take care of it with my pack saw if someone else doesn't get it first.
btw, does the course go through the private property (driveway) just past the "weather rock"? Or am I missing something?

Re:Wilderness 101 scouting reports - 2007/07/09 12:13you must have missed the turn back on to the railbed. It is on private land, but it isn't an issue. Rodney and I went out sunday to check out fisherman's path. I had my saw with me, but we also had 4 kids in tow, so side trips toward Coburn were out of the question.

Re:Wilderness 101 scouting reports - 2007/07/09 12:27that fall on lower sass is above the gasline, but it should be able to be taken out with a pack saw, the green maple is pretty small and the larger one is really rotted

Upper Sass- pretty good shape, somebody built a stoopid foot high rock pile for no apparent reason about 1/2 way its ridable but annoying
Lewistown- good shape, Thistles are pretty pokey in field you ride through, but hey this is called the "Wilderness 101" not the "Interstate Highway 101"
Beautiful/Kikapoo- good shape
Little Poe Trail- a couple 6-8" dia deadfalls about 1/2 way in the trail section. fairly ridable but annoying, maybe build up some rock ramps?
Fishermans path - well, it's the fishermans path...no problems other than the usual hike-a-bike (for me anyway)
Railbed on Coburn side is now cleaned up, thanks to whoever did it.

Re:Wilderness 101 scouting reports - 2007/07/15 20:17Little Shingletown - cut out deadfall that partially blocked trail. The grass is high but not too bad.
Croyle - 2 widow makers are easy to go under but probably should come out - but they are dangerous to saw (need multiple people and good health care coverage). I cut the one at the bottom. It just needs 2 strong lads to shove it off the trail.
Lonberger - clear but needs mowed. I'll try to start weedwacking it this week.

Re:Wilderness 101 scouting reports - 2007/07/20 12:34Theres a new one down on Beautiful about .3 miles in from Conklin Rd. its pretty darn big, prob 18" or so, it will either need a chain saw or some rock work. its not particularly perpendicular to the trail and I think the sight line coming from Conklin is not gonna be very good, we were going the other way. I would suggest cutting it out, but thats just me

Re:Wilderness 101 scouting reports - 2007/07/23 10:38So can you get around the leaning trees on Croyle? If not, is there a chance someone can get some digital pictures of the trees before thursday? Several from Different angles would be best. Rich Edwards is going to be in town and I think I have him on the hook to help out removing them, but he wants to know what he is getting into before he heads for the woods.

Re:Wilderness 101 scouting reports - 2007/07/23 11:302 trees, 3 ft apart, hung up across the trail leaning at a 30% angle. You must go off trail to get under. I hit my camelbak yesterday. Trees are about 16" diameter but very tall meaning you have to cut at the bottom and hope you correctly guestimated what will happen next. Located closer to bottom of trail. Good Luck!

Re:Wilderness 101 scouting reports - 2007/07/23 23:13this is not a trail, and probably not a concern for much time, but there is most of a tree cut down on greenlee rd around beidleheimer. bikes are fine but you can't drive around it.
