This morning Jason took me through Three Bridges for the first time - and in the entryway of the rocky part before you actually get to the bridges, someone has taken a large portion of those big rocks and built a fire pit. As of 8 a.m. this morning - it was still warm. The trail is a mess there and is currently (IMHO) unrideable, covered with deadfall whomever drug over to the fire pit, etc.
I would be more than happy to volunteer my time to repair the entry way there - however being that it was my first time through Three Bridges, I have no idea what it is supposed to look like. If anyone is going to go remove the pit, re-place the rocks, and try to turn it into a trail again - let me know - as I would be more than happy to help.
Thanks, -- Hannah

Re:Three Bridges Retrofitted with Firepit - 2007/06/25 10:07Did they move rocks form the trail closest to Laurel Run, or the far side? There has always been a firepit on the far side that periodically gets out of hand, but if whomever made a new one closer to Laurel run, then they deserve to die a horrible death by ingesting poison ivy. Or at least we can hope. There could probably do a pre or post wednesday clean up (or even during the ride, hint, hint) as it shouldn't take long.

Re:Three Bridges Retrofitted with Firepit - 2007/06/25 12:19The new firepit is on the Laurel Run side - and it is *right* smack in the middle of the entry way to the rock garden path that you have to go down before you actually hit the 3 bridges. Whomever built it obviously didn't realize that there was another fire pit about 40 feet away.
I would be more than willing to help fix the trail on Wednesday evening - though I probably won't ride. Do you have a sense of when (what time) you guys might hit that part of the trail - and I could just drive up and meet you?

Re:Three Bridges Retrofitted with Firepit - 2007/06/25 13:43I will definitely go over there tomorrow morning and if its easy, Ill just dismantle it myself then. if its gonna require more than one weakling mtn biker and/or tools, ill post tomorrow and we can get a game plan together. Thanks for the heads up and willingness to help, hannah!

Re:Three Bridges Retrofitted with Firepit - 2007/06/25 15:35What kind of morons would build a fire pit there? You are basically just off the road 100 feet or less and right in the middle of a trail. The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me. I can't believe anyone would build a fire right in the middle of a trail!

Re:Three Bridges Retrofitted with Firepit - 2007/06/25 16:54You got to remember most people think 100 feet from the road is like being in the middle of no-where and completely isolated. They think if they are there for 15 mins without seeing anybody no one will ever come by. Why do you think I run into so many people "making babies" and expanding their mind's horizons with chemistry.
Oh, and that whole horrible hitting your spouse thing but try to forget about that.

Re:Three Bridges Retrofitted with Firepit - 2007/06/25 18:33As I have never repaired or worked on a trail before - I can't wager by looking at the situation how much work would be involved in fixing it. Hopefully it isn't much. It just seems like it will be somewhat time consuming "surgery" to put things back together in a way that they are rideable.
Maybe if you are lucky, little elves will have stopped by and cleaned it all up! One can hope.

Re:Three Bridges Retrofitted with Firepit - 2007/06/25 19:08I'll go along with the "100 feet from the road is like being in the middle of no-where" argument, but a trail is a trail and that one is pretty dang obvious. Not only does the trail lead to and from the garden, but the tire/wear marks on the rocks are pretty hard to miss. The people that did it are completely clueless, and probably not just about that, but about most aspects of life in general. I'm mostly concerned though that they've dismantled part of the rock garden that we've all come to know and love. Oh well, I guess change is constant.

Re:Three Bridges Retrofitted with Firepit - 2007/06/25 20:45Hopefully Kevin will be able to take a look at the situation tomorrow and give everyone a better sense of what damage may or may not have been done to the trail. If we are lucky - it will be a relatively painless fix - and everything will be back to normal again.

That quote about sums it up. Trails are continuously changing and evolving either at the hands of man or the environment. But we will rebuild and adapt as much as it pains us

things like this just make me wish i had stumbled across our intrepid explorers with a good 4 foot loadbar from yakima. i keep one of those in my truck, ya know. ok, so yes, it is mostly cause i'm too lazy to take it out of my truck. but, that's beside the point.
oh, and raymo, i had thought it was a guy beating his daughter, not his wife. i think that woulda instigated a yakima yearning as well.

Re:Three Bridges Retrofitted with Firepit - 2007/06/26 09:02i'm not sure what the big problem is. ho's been talking about campfire bunny-hopping. well hey...here ya go!!... before a ride someone stops by and gets a big ole crankin' fire goin', and i mean real big so as it's still burnin' when the ride comes through and then everyone can hop the thing. guaranteed to improve bunny hopping skills. if they can't find firewood, i think there's some bridges near by that could be used. real mtn. bikers don't need bridges anyway. and if this unattended fire happens to get out of control...so what?...a few less trees never hurt anyone. just look at all the parking lots and malls around. and then... maybe stash a few brews around so ya can throw the bottles in the rocks to make it even more interesting on the next ride. some broken glass in the rock gardens will improve everyone's commitment to clearing them. slob campers are happy...bikers are happy..horse people are not...but who cares about them anyway. problem solved thank you very much.
seriously....i guess the tuscarora doesn't have the monopoly on "idiots in the woods" after all.
