Tussey mtn trail - 2007/06/19 21:12What are peoples opinions about the amount of brush growth on Tussey? I rode it today for the first time in a while (OK, I rode it two weeks ago and it was much the same, but I digress) and I kind of think it blows. I am not talking about removing any of the obstacles, but I would like to clear out a lot of the stripe maple and grasses that seem to be choking out the trail. I am only willing to do it if I can get about 3 other folks to help me out, as it is going to require lugging the brush cutter and the gas can quite a ways and could be best be done as a shuttle. What do folks think? Is it worth it? In past years, the tree cover and traffic would keep things open, but this year it doesn't seem to be working.

Re:Tussey mtn trail - 2007/06/19 21:25im all for it. i was thinking about doing it myself a few weeks ago. im out this weekend and next sunday, but if you want to figure out a tues or thurs morning that would work for me and if something else is better I can certainly see about working something out.

Re:Tussey mtn trail - 2007/06/20 09:13sounds good to me, the earlier the better as far as a starting time. Where do you think it would be most time effective to park, at the end of the camp road and go up at that point or treaster kettle at the gas line? I guess the other option would be at kettle, but im not sure there's really much to do at that end of the trail

Re:Tussey mtn trail - 2007/06/20 09:19After taking a 'shower' last night from all the wet huckleberry scrubs near kettle, I'd say it could stand a trim. Lonberger is also awful. The grass is so high it obscures the trail. Any chance forestry could mow it?

Re:Tussey mtn trail - 2007/06/20 10:05yeah, after watching those DCNR guys plow though the scrub with the DR on Sunday, I was jealous. I don't know if Rothrock has one of those things, but I can talk to them about it. Maybe thats something we might want to look into as a club?

Re:Tussey mtn trail - 2007/06/20 12:15let me know a time. i'm gonna try to get off work and come up to help. maybe ride a little afterwards. maybe pick up a wheel that harry's probably tired of looking at. maybe quaff a pint or two at otto's. sounds like it could be a good day.
btw....what's a DR ?

Re:Tussey mtn trail - 2007/06/20 14:03Frank, I'm thinking they (forestry) could brushhog it (on a tractor). It would take them a few hours, but that's why they have summer interns.
Ray, a DR is a DR mower, a walk behind brushhog. See this link.

Re:Tussey mtn trail - 2007/06/21 09:26I amend my comment about the main part of the ridge not needing work, I rode it last nite. the worst is the damn grass falling over the trail especially in the burn area. my suggestion is we start at kettle, work our way down one side then back up the other

Re:Tussey mtn trail - 2007/06/26 12:44we are still working out the exact time etc, as we have access through some private ground on the extention side of the ridge, but it will be fairly early, like 7:30 sort of start time. We will use the club "hedge trimmer" but a heavy duty string trimmer would also come in very handy as much of what needs cut is just tall grass. the other main thing we'll need is rakes to get all the crap we cut off the trail

Re:Tussey mtn trail - 2007/06/26 15:13hey, dont kill yourself getting there that early, that hedge trimmer gets heavy so if you want to show up at a more reasonable time given your commute and spell somebody, that would work out just fine
