hrm alan seeger map - 2007/05/14 21:07 frank is probably getting sick of me sending my gps maps to him. . so i'll post the latest one here. this is of alan seeger. i'm sure there's more to fill-in, but i've been out there the last three free days i had, so i'm sick of it. i can't yet say if this is useful to a mountain biker -- though i kinda hate yoder trail, and am coming to prefer the other alternatives, so maybe it does -- and i'm not even sure if seeger is protected from new trail maintenance/revitalization. anyhow, it's probably interesting nonetheless.

ps: if there are yellow smiley-faces in this note, i didn't put 'em there.

frank Re:alan seeger map - 2007/05/14 21:59 No way, I love the random bits of history that show up in my inbox!
Could anyone else open Austin's Attachment?

frank Re:alan seeger map - 2007/05/14 23:33 DOes anyone know where the "Any" Key is?
I am functionally illiterate on the computer. I figured it out and yes I can read it (plus Austin did send me the Jpeg of the map).
Now the important part, where is Seegar road on your map? Any chance Ray can over lay the boundries for the natural Area?

hrm Re:alan seeger map - 2007/05/15 08:15 frank,
i was going to zip up all my track logs (the original raw data) and post it here when i left (in a few weeks). so ray could get it that way if he wanted.

the posted map uses the old topo files as a raster base layer, then adds to that the xy point data of my gps logs (not yet converted to lines because i'm still getting the 'best' data route), the xy point data of my POIs, AND the penndot (i'm pretty sure) vector road data. (what i should probably do is get the private/public layer so you can see where trails have been diverted from their old routes to fit into state land. this is especially evident toward the top of seeger road where "yoder" trail comes up and around to telephone trail.)

anyhow, the point: seeger road IS on the map via the penndot layer. i just didn't label it. my fault ... i was looking at trails, not roads. look to the top right-hand corner of the map and see the brown road? that's seeger road. it also appears in the bottom right-hand quadrant where my yellow xy points cover over most of it.

Raymo853 Re:alan seeger map - 2007/05/15 13:52 Hey, I would be happy to get both your raw tracks and the image outputs. I am using ESRI products (ArcGIS 9.2 specificaly) so I am happy with shapefiles, coverages or even just a lat/long text file.

frank Re:alan seeger map - 2007/05/15 22:00 Austin, It looks like you have one of the trails that I have always searched for, the one that comes off Cooper's Gap and supposedly heads up to the fire tower. I have followed a blue blazed trail several times that comes off the gas line and is very distinct for about 300 yards, but then dies in a scree field. Some of the historical maps show a route actually dipping down from about that point and connecting to Ross, but I can't find it.. Have you come across that?

hrm Re:alan seeger map - 2007/05/16 09:47 ray,
i'm moving back to new hampshire in a few weeks. i'll try to get in as much gps work before then. once i have a free second -- which should happen after the start of june -- i'll try to clean up my data a little bit. then i can send you everything. the biggest issue would be someone other than me thinking i was mapping a trail when i was really just bushwhacking. i ALMOST always mark 'B' when i start to bushwhck and 'C' when i get back on trail ... but sometimes i don't.

frank,
attached is another quick map. i -don't- think i was on that trail you were looking for. the map will show why i think this. yoder & big kettle trails are in a list of places i'm going to GPS next, so hopefully i'll have better news to report in the next week.
