capnjon Black Mo - Rock Run area - 2007/05/03 13:22 Hello all... I'm heading up to Black Moshannon this weekend to try some riding. I haven't ridden there before, so I am relying on the ride descriptions in Griz's Rothrock guide. We'll probably do the Rattlesnake Mountain ride, but may have time to ride another loop. The two Rock Run loops are shown as being closed due to access issues, but the guide doesn't give any explanation of what they are. Is there a way to ride these loops without breakin' the law?

Also, thanks for the heads-up on spring gobbler season. Guess we'll just have to sleep in on Saturday morning.

kevinb Re:Black Mo - Rock Run area - 2007/05/03 13:33 the rock run stuff is open and legal to ride. There had been some question/misunderstanding a few years ago, but you are good to go. The rock run loop starting from rt 504 (rattlesnake pike) including the "ballon string" and the two loops (we usually ride them as more of a figure 8, going all the way down the right side then up the left) is 12-13 miles, but a tough 12-13 miles but should be no problem in one day. There are plenty of other jeep trails and some trails in the rest of the forest in that area to keep you busy on your other day.

frank Re:Black Mo - Rock Run area - 2007/05/03 13:34 You can ride the Rock Run and the AFT (outside of the park, the park is a different story) trails, Forestry is operating under a "don't ask, don't tell" policy regarding Rock run. They refuse to post the trail as open to Mtn bikes, but at the same time, they have an open forestry policy, so they should not tell you no.
We had a series of meetings with Moshannon State Forest about this, and unfortunately, this is best we could come up with. If you run into issues, please do me a favor and be polite, but definately get the person's name and position.

Yoda Re:Black Mo - Rock Run area - 2007/05/03 21:51 I live about 5 miles from the Rock Run trail head and frequent the Black Mo and RR areas a lot and have never had any issues. One bit of advice I will give you is to stay out of the woods on Saturday until at least noon. There are a ton of turkey out that way and many hunters will be out. Enjoy the weekend it looks like a good one.
