hodog Rainy Day Scouting - Bells Ridge - 2007/04/16 12:04 I was out looking for evidence of Bells Ridge trail on Sunday. The trail is marked and worn in from Beidleheimer road up to bells ridge but obscured the opposite way. I hiked in from the bottom of Croyle and discovered Beidlehiemer trail actually extends across the road. I crossed Croyle run and hiked around the ridge until I found the unmarked trail used by hunters I am sure is Bells
Ridge. Following this trail back down to Croyle run it disappears near the creek but I believe it goes downstream to a very nice camping spot complete with rock grill. From here the crossing of Croyle run was difficult. I figured I would try hiking up a drainage as I might find evidence of trail there. However the rocky terrain and plethora of deadfall kept me from finding anything for certain. As I bushwacked back to Beidleheimer road I emerged only 50 ft from the trailhead. But I also noticed a drainage downstream that may be where the trail originally went. I'll be back the next rainy day...

hrm Re:Rainy Day Scouting - Bells Ridge - 2007/04/17 10:25 i haven't followed bells or beidle trails south. (have you seen the old topos which do show this?). but i did find another old road in the vicinity. for whatever reason i can't get dns to work over my vpn connection today, which is the only way i can get my license on arcmap, so forgive the attached map extracted from my magellan software.

it may be of some interest to you. maybe not.

although the marked route is an old road -- that is, it has two tracks -- from charcoal flat to charcoal flat, i did find one isolated mark of a much older route (the typical disturbance of rocks). that's not indicated on the map as it was just one point (though it is marked with a POI). lastly, where the old road begins in the south, i had been following, very briefly, a well cleared trail. i'm nearly certain i was on public land at that point, but it was right at the public-private boundary, so i suspect it was mowed (really) by someone from the nearby camp.

hrm Re:Rainy Day Scouting - Bells Ridge - 2007/04/17 10:27 the image file was too wide in pixels. it's attached as a file (not an image)

hodog Re:Rainy Day Scouting - Bells Ridge - 2007/04/17 10:47 Thanks! I had hiked down the old railroad bed and found some charcoal flats and old roads but nothing that took me down to croyle run. I'll have to try to follow your route the next time I'm out. To answer your question I do have a map that shows bells ridge extending south to Gettis ridge.
