hodog Goodbye Tick Trails - 2010/12/17 10:26 Well your state taxes are helping destroy your bikes trails...so some idiots in cars can cut off 2 minutes getting from Science Park to Blue Course. Most liveable small city in the US!!!

frank Re:Goodbye Tick Trails - 2010/12/18 20:41 Right, but since the trails weren't legal to begin with, it seems that they were around longer than expected.
About 5 years ago, I started a conversation with some folks in the Parks and Rec dept about trying to gain access to the Penn State land around the Deer Pens. They were for it, but they weren't really the ones who would have final say, its the School of Ag that controls the land. Anyone interested in trying to get that discussion going again? Between Tick land and Scotia being gone, there is really nowhere to get people started in mountain biking anymore.

scarcollector Re:Goodbye Tick Trails - 2010/12/18 20:49 The article mentions that the project is to begin in the spring!?
Well, I thought the road extension project had already started because of the all the log and obstacle clearing that has been going on.

I realize I (& others) did not and do not have a right to cut-in trail, without permission, on property that does not belong to me or us. So I can't say who ever clear cut logs+ was in violation of property rights or whatever, but dang. A few sections that used to wreck me but then mastered are gone. Gone is the satisfaction of clearing them, gone is the challenge (& more satisfaction) of working on other sections that still gave me trouble. Won't matter in the long run as these trails will be history in short time. Other difficult trails may pop up and may be challenging so feel free to cut alternates (not short-cuts) around what stumps you.

hodog Re:Goodbye Tick Trails - 2010/12/20 08:57 Good point about easier alternate lines. The guy dumbed down the trails to help his nephews who were discouraged by all the logs. Honorable but misguided.
Someone needs to find an endangered snail in those woods!

rtc Re:Goodbye Tick Trails - 2010/12/20 21:33 Maybe I'm being naive and overly optimistic but won't this road extension only destroy the bottom 10% or so of the tick trail woods leaving the rest in their current condition???

If thats the case couldn't a little rerouting be done and the trails made good as new?

hodog Re:Goodbye Tick Trails - 2010/12/21 08:52 The plan to build a 'town within town' in that area. It may not happen all at once but there is a plan to develop the entire area - think Wegmans with housing.

Zillon Re:Goodbye Tick Trails - 2011/01/26 18:08 Because that's exactly what this area needs - another shopping center.

Dave Re:Goodbye Tick Trails - 2011/02/10 16:31 I think the deer pens property would be a good idea and would be easy access from the bike path. Frank if you know how to get this started I will help out in any way possible.

Polonusa Re:Goodbye Tick Trails - 2011/02/15 23:30 Being new to state college (this is my freshman year) but an intermediate mountain biker back home, I have recently been looking to find where the hot cycling spots are around the area. obviously I've heard of all the RockRoth trails but I'm just recently hearing word about these "accuweather" trails. too bad they are destroying them because from what I hear, there's some techincal riding back there. Can anyone direct me to the trailhead for these accuweather trails because I'd love to try them once everything thaws and dries out (hopefully before the construction begins!). Thanks NMBA, im excited for these next 4 years

hodog Re:Goodbye Tick Trails - 2011/02/18 11:40 They are across blue course drive before science park road (look on google maps). Head for the trees!

There has been some good news as the developer is delaying the project. However I am not sure if that means delaying the road. I am guessing it does not as they are separate (public $$$ for road).
