Jim G Re:Pics from Lower Allen Classic - 2006/12/04 22:46 Thanks for posting these Rodney.

Last month, Frank, Jimbo, Harry & Linda, and two of the Glover clan went down to Lower Allen to catch some cyclocross racing. Local racers were Harry, Matt Ferrari, Bill Alcorn, Chris Johnson, Wes Schempf and Ryan Leech.

It was a great day for spectating with unseasonably warm temps. The course offered great viewing opportunities to get close to the action and cheer and/or heckle.

If you look closely in the movie file you'll see the elite class winner, Jeremy Powers, bunny hop the barriers. The only other racer to do the bunny hop was Alcorn.

Lower Allen park is near Camp Hill, less than two hours away. Cyclocross is great for spectators. I'd like to make it an annual trip. Maybe next year HO will be racing. If not, we'll have to drag him down there so he can see some city slickers in action.

hodog Re:Pics from Lower Allen Classic - 2006/12/05 09:34 Jim, thx for posting these - there are some great pics! And I'll take you up on your offer next year. I find cyclocross entertaining. What is cool is the guys who can dismount/run/remount the barriers as fast as the guys that bunny hop.

frank Re:Pics from Lower Allen Classic - 2006/12/05 12:04 I haven't watched the video yet, but Of the two times I saw Jeremy Powers go over the barrier, it wasn't that impressive. He is usually (or at least has the reputation) of being really smooth. The first lap of this race, the other racers were expecting him to try it, so one guy put him into the tape to blow his rythem. Very Nascar. The next time was the last lap when he was tired and only did it to appease the crowd, and he kind of laughed at how slow he did it.

Jim G Re:Pics from Lower Allen Classic - 2006/12/05 19:01 His bunny hops were as smooth as they could get, given the short distance between the barriers. On the last lap he went diagonally across the width of the barriers, I guess to stretch it out a bit and get more room to land between the barriers. Bunny hopping was not the quickest way over the Lower Allen barriers.

His hops were pretty darn smooth. The second ones were really nice. Not your typical yank-on-the-bars-and-pedals-at-the-same-time bunny hop. Instead he arced nicely over each barrier, which at slow speed was really impressive. I had a good view of the second ones but I didn't have the camera ready.
