NMBA's Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day
Written by Terri Rudy
Thursday, 06 September 2012

NMBA will again be hosting Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day on Saturday, October 6, 2012, from 10am-2pm, at Shaver's Creek Environmental Center, located at 3400 Discovery Road, Petersburg, PA.

TKMBD is an annual celebration held on the first Saturday of October. The event, developed and coordinated by IMBA, strives to encourage communities around the world to join together and ride mountain bikes with youth. Last year, we had more than 13,000 participants at hundreds of events across the globe, including: Italy, Australia, South Africa, Canada, Malaysia, and Mexico. Informal or formal, one child or one hundred children, TKMBD celebrates the joy of riding in the dirt.

Besides being good, healthy fun, the goal is to develop a connection between kids and the natural world around them. Today's children are tomorrow's land managers and politicians — future decision-makers for important matters like recreation and access to public lands. How different might our current access landscape look today if previous generations of policy makers had grown up riding bikes on natural-surface trails?

We will do different rides (depending on skill level), have a light snack after the ride, and then enjoy an animal show!

Children of all ages are welcome; bring a bike and a helmet for each rider. Parents must remain at the Center for the duration of the event. All riders are required to wear a helmet.

"Pedal Driven"

United by the mission to create a more enjoyable, more sustainable world, the Northwest Emmy-nominated documentary film making team at Howell at the MoonProductions has joined forces with IMBA to create “Pedal-Driven: a bike-umentary”. It has been quite a ride, and THE NITTANY MOUNTAIN BIKING ASSOCIATION would like to invite you to join us for a screening of “Pedal-Driven: a bike-umentary”.  PEDALDRIVEN will be playing at THE STATE THEATRE on THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 2012, at 7:00 PM.  Tickets are $8/per person and can be purchased online through The State Theatre, at the box office, or the night of the event.  On hand for the showing will be Steve and Morgan Lommele, members of the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) Trail Care Crew.

For more than two years, the filmmaking team at Howell at the Moon traveled across the western UnitedStates, compelled to tell a story of clandestine groups of roguemountain bikers who build illegal trails on Americaʼs public lands. Promises were made to keep locations secret, breathtaking footage of extraordinary riders was captured, interviews were conducted with both sides of the conflict, battle lines were drawn, illegal trails were ripped out, existing trails were shut down. Then, somewhere along the way something shifted: both sides came to the table, partnerships were forged, agreements were signed.

This engaging and powerful new documentary film is designed to advance the national discussion around where mountain biking belongs in the American landscape. PEDALDRIVEN expertly explores the long-standing conflicts between riders and the federal agencies charged with managing our public lands, as this exploding sport makes its way out of the woods and into the public eye.

PEDAL-DRIVEN is much more than a bike movie.  It is a film about every Americanʼs right to the lands that belong to all of us. As Woody Guthrie famously sang 70 years ago, “This land is your land, this land is my land,” and in that spirit this film was created as a non-profit, from which all proceeds will benefit sustainable trail-building on public lands in the Pacific Northwest. The hope is to inspire and engage Americans in a dialogue about where mountain biking and other sports belong on the American landscape.

The film was created inaffiliation with IMBA and with the cooperation of the US Forest Service, and major funding was provided by Shimano, Specialized, Clif Bar, The film was created in affiliationwith IMBA and with the cooperation of the US Forest Service, and major fundingwas provided by Shimano, Specialized, Clif Bar, Diamondback, Yakima Racks, Pyramid Brewing Company, City ofLeavenworth, Timberland, and Steven's Pass Bike Park, with promotional supportfrom Pinkbike.com.
